"BIG BANG BIG BOOM"

It's that time again where I feel I need to show off some more intense Vimeo shit. "BIG BANG BIG BOOM" was shown to me a couple weeks back. Now I've seen a few videos where artist's are doing this sort of thing, time-lapse paintings. But this one is some unbelievable scale! Showing what we know as the evolution of life over ten minutes of complex, detailed, hand painted work. Props to the geniuses from BLU that put this together.

Air Time

Got to give a big shout out to Kovu for getting his first Radio 1 play last night on 1Xtra. His collaboration with Rugby producer Artek 'And Then' and his own remix of 'Leave This City' both got selected in Todd Edwards guest mix on DJ Q's show. Things seem to be on the up for Kovu at the moment and we here at Greasy hope that it remains this way.

Insight

Out of all the 78 posts so far to date from Greasy, I don't think one post has been related to the core part of Greasy Couture the clothing, which we agree is pretty shocking. Today Me & the team thought we would change this and show you that the clothing line is coming, and we're not just a photography blog, which is what a few people have suggested. Greasy Couture was created in 2007 and has been slowly coming together over the past three years, in this time the brand has gone through many different looks. One of the main reasons for this, is changes of staff in the Greasy team, this bringing different views and outlooks of the brand, the current set up of Rich, Matt & Me has to be the most solid so far. Since Greasy Couture was started quality has always been top of the list. The first garments to drop for Greasy will be, a selection of black and white t-shirts to keep it simple. After researching and getting samples of various t-shirts we opted to go for the American based brand Alstyle, Diamond Supply Co, also use this company, along with a few more high end brands. We didn't just want your standard Fruit of the Loom to print on as we want out products to last longer and to be of a higher quality. Getting hold of the Alstyle t-shirts was not easy as they don't ship to Europe, won't bore you with the details on that but it was a effort. GC

Re-opening the box of t-shirts to photograph them, some old Greasy samples were inside. This was of the first designs from back in 2007 'Spit Tooth Green', very similar to Benny Gold's 'Stay Gold' plane.

Insight

The first logo design came from the font 'Levi Brush', originally I was a fan of this font, but over the last few years i've seen it popping up more and more often being used commercially.

Insight

All Coventry citizens should recognise this design, a photo of the war memorial in the Memorial Park.

Insight

Slowly making the final steps from early sample iron on prints on any plain t-shirt I could get hold of, to premium t-shirts and screen printing.

Mix Mash

Computer problems have been plaguing me too much the past few weeks, luckily after losing my phone in Portugal I came home to an iPhone which has been a saviour getting access to my regular selection of websites. Sunday I finally put the effort into installing Photoshop on another computer till my towers sorted. Monday brought an upload of a selection photos over the past couple of weeks, sorted through them and watermarked them up to bring you a mash up of recent shots.

Barroca

Took some time to get some more questions out to another up and coming DJ/Producer. This time "Barroca" who is heavily involved in house music. James Wheeler, another good friend of ours shows a definate influence from the Minimal/Tech house scene. James Wheeler, Barroca.

So when did it first click that you wanted to get involved with DJing?
Well it was when I was much younger when I started listening to music properly and my ears were introduced to the art of mixing two tracks simultaneously to get this continuous sound that could go on for however long you wanted. As I grew older it became clear that I had a genuine passion for music as all i ever used to do was stay up until the early hours hammering track after track out of my trusty little mp3 player. I started playing with music and experimenting and slowly started to learn how to do what I understood at the time was DJing, never really knowing that I would end up wanting to do it for the rest of my life.

What equipment are you playing with when DJing now?
Well I have been using CDJ's for a while now since I got a pair of my own...but hope to move on to integrating a lot more into my setup, its just having the money. The next big step is to start using my laptop running Traktor or Serato...a similar setup to what a lot of DJ's are using these days, so keeping up with the technology really and nothing too special. Not yet anyway.

Now you've got through a few DJ names of recent due to genre changes and personal preference. What can we all call you now?
Well I have a few different names depending on what I'm doing, I find it hard to stick to one genre...thats the main problem but the name you will start seeing the most is 'Barroca' which is my latest idea for all the house/techno music I'm working on...and I think this one is here to stay.

You've been producing some tracks for a while now, and your now stepping it up and building a studio. What plans for the future have you got that this studio will be involved in?
Yeah, I have always wanted a space dedicated to my music and its not long now until I'm moving in...I can't wait. In the future, I would love to do a lot of things but its early days yet so I will see what happens for the next few years and just go with it. Ideally I have always had a dream of releasing tracks on my own label so I think that my main goal at the moment.

Here are two of his tunes that have been put up on his sound cloud - Barroca Soundcloud. Don't be confused by the Einhaus title, that's an old name.

(M.E.G.A.) BBQ

Monday was meant to be the last of the little sunshine that England had in store for us for the rest of 2010, so we fully took advantage of that and dipped round Luke Meggitt's (M.E.G.A.) for a BBQ.

WESC

Something a little different. Wesc introduces bed sheets to ensure your bed is as clean as your wardrobe. A litle rip of Daily Street, they're nice words. Wesc used prolific companies Mode2 and Delta to produce these unique autumn bed wear additions. Mode2 being involved in the woman sketch and Delta in the other. Something I definately wana' cop, but something I definately cannot involve effort & money to get. Nice one Wesc.

Portugal II

Pretty much the villa we stayed in blew us all away when we saw the place for the first time. Eight bedrooms with en-suites, two kitchens, roof terrace, three swimming pools and  too much more. Being in a group of eleven lads we knew we were in for a massive week.

Down at the marina we found 'Fanta Pineapple' haven't seen it in England, that needs to change.

Obviously McDonald's had to be done.

Drink and the roof terrace flex for Rhys.

Kovu

Today I took the time out to get an email to a good friend of Greasy, Kieran Hartley. I've been meaning to get some questions to him for a while and today was as good a day as any. Writer of the ever popular "O Rly Tuff Guy" and now an up and coming DJ/Producer. Kieran Hartley, otherwise known as Kovu.

So Kovu when did you first start producing?

I got a copy of Fruity Loops when I was about 14/15 and started to play with that, it didn't make much sense at the time but after a couple months of reading up on production techniques and learning stuff from other people I soon had the know how to lay down a basic track. I then moved onto Reason 4 , and finally Ableton Live which is what I now use to produce my tracks.

And when did you first begin to DJ?
Roughly about the same time as I got a copy of fruit loops I started taking an interest in DJ'ing after I spoke to a DJ who visited my school to teach people. After getting to grips with the basics with the help of my old midi controller I progressed and started playing local nights, my recent sets have all been on CD though, there is so much more control with CD's.

Now I've seen you DJ many times. Most recent being for Bouteek in Coventry. What would say your best set has been?
In Manchester for a night called Just Skank. It was a small underground venue with 500 capacity but the venue was still maxed out at 4am when I took over from Flux Pavillion to the best crowd I've ever seen!

And if you wanted me to show off one tune in particular what would it be?
The latest track on my soundcloud entitled 'And Then' because it was sampled from a high contrast track. Its a garage track that I produced with a head from Rugby called Artek:

Massive thankyou to Kovu for taking time to give us a few words. Heres a personal favourite from Kovu's soundcloud. M.I.A (HARD LA) - Steppin Up (Kovu Remix)

We will most definately be doing more work with Kovu and "O Rly" in the future. Definately someone to watch.

Portugal I

Landed back in the UK last night after an immense week in Portugal, wish I was still out there but it's still good to be home! Slight bit of a recovery is needed after a week of minimal sleep and hangovers. We kick started the holiday off with a few pints at the Rocket before getting the train to Birmingham airport.

Destination Faro.

Watch out for more shots of the week over the coming days.

Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi. Musical mastermind. We been listening in to Kid Cudi for a while, "Man on the moon" pretty much smashed it. But I aint gonna' lie, I missed out on this untill tonight. Pretty much one of the cleanest freestyles goin'.

We been trying to get off the youtube hype for the princaples off keeping the blog clean, but this gets it. Kid Cudi.

No neon

Pretty much I aint had the chance to blog cuz' people have been scorchin' out in my yard. The past three days has been non stop chaos. Got the chance just now to hit the infamous beast though and seen these. We aren't no fan of the whole neon scene. Especially when you see the neon on the neck and cuff of the rutheless day to day wear that gets rolled round Cov town. However Nike have fully gone on leng and gained appreciation in many ways. Location: Argyll Street, London. My source, you know. Hypebeast

Philip Bloom

I remember ages ago James linked me this video called "Sky" by Philip Bloom. At the time it was probably some of the best footage on Vimeo that I'd seen. In two words, sick photography. Here, check it out.

But anyway, today after scrolling through Vimeo yet again I seen his name come up. So after looking though all his stuff I've decided that this geeza' is fully the man. My favourite from all his work, "Venice's People" shot on Venice beach in LA using the Canon 7D. This film shows the people that live their and gives a major insight into their culture. This footage is more focused than the GOD channel.

If you wanna' see more of Philip Blooms work check him out on his website - Philip Bloom

Portugal

Rich and Matt did Turkey a few weeks back, so now after months of waiting it's my turn. Later today I'm hittin' Portugal with nine friends. I'll have my camera so hopefully I'll come back a bring a few posts for your viewing.

So anyway last night an early night was needed in preperation, but I can never spend a whole day and night in my yard. So I got my camera and bowled out to meet Harmit and Rhys.

See you all next week, keep it Greasy!
